Art Nouveau Brass Umbrella/Cane Stand in the Form of Intertwined Serpents, France, Early 20th Century
A refined cast brass umbrella (or cane) stand, made in the Art Nouveau style in the early 1900s, likely of French manufacture.
The upper section, designed to hold umbrellas and canes, is formed by an intricate network of finely detailed serpents (with well-defined scales and heads) creating six large rings and six smaller ones. The central heart-shaped handle is decorated with grape and vine leaf motifs, consistent with the naturalistic taste typical of the period.
The stem is likewise modelled to resemble a tree trunk entwined with serpents and vine tendrils with leaves, resting on a wide oval brass base, decorated in relief with vegetal motifs (leaves and tendrils) echoing the theme of the whole piece, also functioning as a drip tray.
The entire piece displays the warm, burnished patina typical of aged brass, a sign of authenticity and age.
Condition
Good overall condition for its age, with normal signs of use and surface oxidation consistent with a period piece. No known restoration. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
