Curatorial & Artistic Description:
“Easy Rider (Somewhere on Route 66)” is a dynamic, unapologetic spatial piece positioned at the intersection of sculpture, Pop Art, and custom/lowbrow counterculture. In this work, Marcin Pawlik redefines the archetype of American freedom and the mythos of the legendary Mother Road, filtering them through graphic novel aesthetics, cartoon exaggeration, and the rebellious spirit of the motorcycle underground.
At the heart of the composition is an anthropomorphic, hyper-expressive biker horse donned in a classic helmet, featuring retro goggles crafted from real mirror glass and a skull-patterned bandana made of authentic canvas. His maniacal facial expression—wild eyes, bared teeth, and dangling tongue—interacts seamlessly with narrative storytelling elements: an empty fuel gauge in the upper left corner, a comic-strip speech bubble filled with expletives, and the iconic Route 66 shield. Together, they construct a dark-humored scene of sudden existential crisis in the middle of nowhere. The eponymous “Easy Rider” confronts a raw reality: the tank is dry, the engine dies, and the myth of absolute freedom instantly shifts into comic panic.
Craftsmanship & Structural Form:
The work is distinguished by its intricate, multi-layered architecture and a rich variety of textures. It is built from dozens of individually precision-cut, sanded, and hand-painted MDF and HDF components, further enriched by the incorporation of actual mirror and textile elements. By utilizing layered spacers and a high-density floor polystyrene base, the artist achieved an impressive physical depth of 13 cm. This structural approach transcends the boundaries of traditional painting, entering the realm of high-relief sculpture and bespoke shadow box installations.
Natural ambient light interacts directly with the stepped layers, generating real physical shadows that amplify the composition’s kinetic energy. The bold, saturated color palette—a vibrant red background, deep blacks, crisp whites, and the authentic reflections captured in the mirrored goggles—further enhances its graphic intensity and visual depth.
Collector’s Note:
Executed as a strictly unique, one-of-a-kind piece (1/1), this work represents a rare and distinctive acquisition for collectors of contemporary art, Urban Art, Pop Art, and bold automotive-inspired lowbrow aesthetics.
