--------
Główne dzieło Charlesa Blanca (1813-1882), krytyka i historyka sztuki, brat polityka Louisa Blanca. Blanca był m.in. dyrektorem Beaux-Arts i profesorem estetyki i historii sztuki w Collège de France.
tablicach i rysunkach;
etykach;
książkach;
skulpturach i obiektach z marmuru lub brązu;
ivorywach i terakocie;
medalikach i broni;
porcelanie i meblach;
emaliach i lakach;
a komu należało dzieło w XVIII lub na początku XIX wieku;
kiedy zostało sprzedane;
za jaką cenę;
z jaką atribucją było wówczas znane;
Należy jednak być ostrożnym z dawnymi atribucjami: odzwierciedlają one wiedzę i praktyki rynku w tamtym czasie i niekoniecznie odpowiadają atribucji przyjętej dziś.

Rare Original Edition in 2 volumes in-8 demi basane, iv-480; 636 pages – Some light and scattered foxing – Pleasant copy.
--------
Important work by Charles Blanc (1813-1882), art critic and historian, brother of the politician Louis Blanc. Blanc was notably director of the Beaux-Arts and professor of aesthetics and art history at the Collège de France.
Charles Blanc, Le Trésor de la curiosité, from the sales catalogues of paintings, drawings, prints, books, marbles, bronzes, ivories, terracotta, stained glass, medals, weapons, porcelain, furniture, enamels, lacquers, and other works of art, with various notes and historical and biographical notices, Paris, Veuve J. Renouard, 1857-1858, 2 volumes.
The book is preceded by a letter from Adolphe Narcisse Thibaudeau on "curiosity and the curious".
It is not simply a history of art. Blanc has compiled about a thousand sales catalogues in order to build up an immense repertoire of art objects that have been sold at public auctions. He notes in particular the selling prices, the owners and the information allowing to follow the history of the works. The INHA points out that its ambition was to collect the remarkable objects that appeared in public auctions over approximately 120 years.
It contains information on:
the tables and drawings;
the prints;
the books;
the sculptures and objects in marble or bronze;
the ivories and terracotta;
the medals and weapons;
the porcelain and furniture;
the enamels and lacquers;
the large private collections and their dispersion.
Historical Value
For your source classification, I would place it as:
It is particularly valuable for the history of collections and the art market. It is not a primary source in the sense that Blanc generally did not produce the documents he cites: he compiles them from sales catalogues.
It can therefore be very useful to find:
to whom a work belonged in the 18th or early 19th century;
when it was sold;
at what price;
under which attribution was she then known;
how a work or a collection is passed from one owner to another.
However, one must be careful with old attributions: these reflect the knowledge and practices of the market at the time and do not necessarily correspond to the attribution chosen today.
