Shintarō Miyawaki (1942–2010) był japońskim artystą gekigi known for his mature, realistic drawing style and adult-oriented storytelling. He is best known for The Rapeman (THE レイプマン), the highly controversial manga series that ran from 1985 to 1992.

The Rapeman, with original story/scenario by Keiko Aisaki, was serialized by Leed-sha and collected under its SP Comics label. Blending black comedy, crime and adult themes, the series became notorious for its provocative content and for pushing the boundaries of what was considered acceptable in manga.

Its notoriety extended beyond manga: The Rapeman was adapted into live-action productions beginning in the late 1980s, followed by a series of original videos in the 1990s and a two-part anime adaptation in 1994.

Miyawaki also created works such as Hatsukoi Album and Pai no Oto Stories, demonstrating a broader talent for realistic storytelling, complex narratives and social commentary. While THE Rapeman became his best-known creation, its notoriety also overshadowed much of the rest of his career.

Today, a series such as The Rapeman would be extremely difficult to publish, yet it remains a controversial part of manga and gekiga history, and a striking example of the freedom and extremes found in Japanese adult manga of the period.

This lot contains only the original artwork, not the original publication. We have deliberately chosen to offer a non-provocative page from the series, in which the main character is mistaken for a doctor.
