Torquato Tasso - Jerusalem Delivrée - 1788-1788
A lovely set of Torquato Tasso who was an Italian poet, remembered for posterity for his epic La Gerusalemme liberata (formerly translated under the title La Jérusalem délivrée, now as Jérusalem libérée, 1580).
It is an epic poem in which he depicts, in the style of chivalric novels, the battles between Christians and Muslims at the end of the First Crusade, during the siege of Jerusalem.
He died just when the Pope was about to crown him "King of Poets".
Until the beginning of the 19th century, “Le Tasse” was one of the most widely read poets in Europe:
- Jean-Jacques Rousseau was one of his many fans; he loved to read and reread Le Tasse.
- Auguste Comte made him the representative of modern epic literature in his positivist calendar and Simone Weil saw in "Jérusalem délivrée" one of the highest expressions of Christian hope.
