ROMAN EMPIRE – Probus (AD 276–282) - Silvered Billon Antoninianus – Antioch Mint This impressive antoninianus was issued during the reign of Emperor Probus, one of the most capable soldier-emperors of the late 3rd century AD. Probus is celebrated for restoring stability to the Roman Empire after decades of crisis, successfully defending the frontiers against barbarian invasions and reasserting imperial authority across Gaul, the Balkans, and the East. Obverse IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Probus facing right, emphasizing his military role and imperial authority. Reverse CLEMENTIA TEMP Probus standing right, holding a parazonium, receiving Victory on a globe from Jupiter, who stands left holding a scepter. This powerful scene symbolizes divine favor, clemency, and the restoration of order (Clementia Temporum) following years of turmoil.
