A restrung necklace of spherical mammoth bone beads slightly increasing in size towards the centre. Each bead has been made to show the many variations of colour, texture and pattern upon the bone, such as striking mottled finishes. The beads range in hue from dark, yellow ochre, dusky grey and creamy white. Signs of wear as consistent with age, such as surface roughness and scratches. Please note that the necklace has been restrung on string.
The Devensian period is the term given to the last extensive glacial period that covered the Earth by British geologists. Geologists from other countries label the glacial period differently. Devensian derives its name from the Latin ‘Devenses’, translated as ‘those living by the Dee’. The Dee is a river in Northern Wales where earthly deposits from the glacial period are particularly evident.
