韦拉克鲁斯 陶器 前哥伦布时期的维拉克鲁斯微笑头颅 - 16.5 cm
A finely crafted Sonriente (“smiling face”) head from the Veracruz Culture, dating to 900–1500 CE. Made in ceramics/terracotta, this expressive piece represents one of the most iconic forms within the Remojadas tradition.
Sonrientes are known for their wide, joyful smiles set within almost triangular faces, a stylistic hallmark of Veracruz artistry. These figures often appear as disembodied heads, as in this example, though they are sometimes found attached to childlike bodies with outstretched arms and open palms. The characteristic smile is highly stylized, typically showing teeth and conveying a ritual or symbolic significance rather than naturalistic expression.
This example measures W 16.5 × H 16 cm (24 cm including display). Its surface, form, and proportions reflect the classic aesthetic of late pre‑Columbian Veracruz ceramic production.
