腓尼基 绿玻璃 Scaraboid, 封印:驯兽师场景
A Phoenician green glass scaraboid seal with an incised reverse. The seal is oval in shape with straight sides and pierced longitudinally for suspension. The obverse is curved and smooth. The flat base features an engraved scene of 'beast-tamer', a common seal motif in many ancient cultures. The scene depicts a human figure on the right extending his arm towards a horned quadruped, possibly ibex, as if holding it by its horn. Surface pitting and chipping to the glass. A larger chip to the bottom left corner. The piece has been professionally repaired.
Please note the impression is for reference only.
In Ancient Phoenicia, as in many ancient societies, jewellery was an important social marker used to demonstrate wealth, social status and privilege. The scarab, which, despite being a uniquely Egyptian innovation, soon became integrated into many neighbouring cultures that were in contact with the Ancient Egyptians, such as the Phoenicians. This piece therefore represents the combination of different characteristics, showing the inter-connectivity of various civilisations in the ancient world. This was due to well-established trade routes, with different peoples often borrowing styles and artistic techniques from one another.
Measurements: (circa) L 1.8cm x W 1.6cm x H 0.8cm
