Islamic world / Ottoman Empire, antique silver ring with a rectangular green glass intaglio. The intaglio is set in a raised bezel and is engraved with a stylised quadruped, possibly a deer or antelope, and bordered by a band of incised pseudo-script. The bezel border and ring band are ornately decorated with geometric and linear patterns, including stylised sun or rosette motifs. The interior of the ring is engraved with a stylised bird motif, shown in profile with a curved beak, rounded eye with flowing incised lines forming the wings, tail and body. The decorative pseudo-inscriptions and animal motifs are characteristic of rings from the Islamic world, where symbolic and ornamental designs were often preferred over readable text.
