Lunulae appear from the Bronze Age onward and continue in various forms into the Iron Age and later periods.
In Celtic belief systems, the lunula (crescent shape) was closely associated with the moon and its cycles, symbolising renewal, fertility, and the rhythms of nature. Classical writers note that Druid rituals and timekeeping were closely tied to lunar cycles rather than solar calendars.
Lunulae and crescent-shaped ornaments were often worn as protective amulets, believed to safeguard the wearer and promote balance between the natural and spiritual worlds. Their recurring use in Celtic material culture suggests a strong symbolic connection to female vitality, regeneration, and cosmic order, rather than purely decorative intent.
