Ancient Egyptian Faience Hathor Head Amulet
Circa 664-332 BC - Late Period
This faience amulet presents the head of Hathor in low relief. The face is framed by a broad wig. The reverse is flat and undecorated.
Hathor is one of the principal goddesses of ancient Egypt, venerated from the Old Kingdom into the Roman period. She embodies joy, music, dance, love, sexuality, fertility, and motherhood; she is also a sky goddess and the protective “Eye of Re.” As “Lady of the West” she welcomes the dead and offers nourishment from the sacred sycamore. Under the title “Lady of Turquoise,” she oversees Sinai’s mining regions and, more broadly, Egypt’s interactions with foreign lands.
Dimensions: 2,5cm x 1,2cm x 0,7cm
Provenance: Private European Collection; formerly acquired from old UK and European collection formed since the 1970s.
