A fine Ancient Roman silver denarius of Julia Domna, the wife of the Emperor Septimius Severus. The obverse depicts the draped bust of the empress, facing right, with her hair waved elaborately and coiled at back. The accompanying legend reads IVLIA AVGVSTA. The reverse features Cybele, towered and draped, seated left on a throne, holding a branch in her extended right hand and sceptre in her left hand, resting her left arm on drum set. There is a lion on either side of throne. The legend reads MATER DEVM. The coin was likely minted in Rome. Diameter: (circa) 1.9cm Weight: 3.44g Provenance: Ex London Art Market, acquired 1980s-90s.
