Handmade pendant with a Roman Lapis Lazuli bird amulet. The body is carved in a compact, rounded form with a gently curved neck and small head. Incised details indicate the eye, wing and tail feathers. The deep blue stone displays natural variations and lighter inclusions typical of lapis lazuli The ancient bead is mounted with modern fittings, including a suspension loop and decorative elements, allowing it to be worn as a pendant. -> In the Celtic and Roman world birds were seen as messengers from the divine and bringers of good or ill omen. A Roman augur observed the behaviour of birds to receive omens. Depending on the birds, the auspices from the gods could be favourable or unfavourable. Doves and other small birds were also often associated with fertility and love. Length: ± 31,8 mm Width: ± 22,7 mm maximum Condition: good condition and wearable. The ancient bead is restrung and combined with modern gold-plated spacer beads and fittings. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images. Amulets made from Lapis Lazuli could be worn to invoke Jupiter’s favour, protection, and wisdom, as he was a god of divine authority and justice. Ground Lapis Lazuli was used for decorative and cosmetic purposes, but it was also believed to have medicinal properties. Roman physicians sometimes recommended it for various ailments, such as improving eyesight, reducing headaches, or for soothing the soul. In ancient Greece and Rome, Lapis Lazuli was linked to Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. In Roman tradition, oaths were sworn on the Iuppiter Lapis (Jupiter Stone), housed in the Temple of Jupiter. This stone symbolized Jupiter's role as the divine lawmaker and protector of order. It was especially significant during ceremonies, such as taking oaths of office, to emphasize the seriousness and sacred nature of the promises made.
