Description
Late Vaghela Dynasty – Rare Navatirthika Altar of Suparshvanatha
Samvat 1354 – 1297 A.D.
COLLECTOR'S OPPORTUNITY: The 7th Tirthankara (Suparshvanatha) under a 5-Cobra Canopy
The Art of Sacred Inlay | Specialist Study & Epigraphic Validation
"For the collector seeking to complete the lineage of the 24 Jinas, the appearance of a Suparshvanatha of this quality is a significant event. The combination of an absolute dating to the year 1297 and the certified identification of the 7th Tirthankara makes this piece an absolute rarity on the current market." — Olivier Maréchal, Specialist.
TECHNICAL & MATERIAL ANALYSIS
My investigative work on this exceptional piece (Inventory Number: NV 152) is based on a rigorous observation of material and iconographic facts:
Rare Identification & Identity Rediscovery:
• The expertise allowed for the formal requalification of the object as Suparshvanatha (7th Jina) thanks to the detection of the 5-cobra (Panca-phana) canopy . This discriminating attribute radically distinguishes it from the more common theme of Parshvanatha (typically associated with 7 or 9 cobras) .
• Microscopic traceology analysis reveals extremely fine linear incisions marking the limit of the dhoti, confirming a high-ranking commission for the Shvetambara sect .
• The work on the meditation cushion (Gaddi) features cross-hatching and incised dots simulating the texture of a silk brocade, a technical feat of the workshop highlighted by a copper inlay .
• Beneath the legs, the central fabric panel (Dhotar) displays geometric lozenge motifs incised with a chisel.
The Mark of Time & Devotion (Historical Life)
• The "soft" wear observed on the most prominent reliefs (the Jina's nose, lions' heads) confirms centuries of ritual handling and sacred anointings (Abhisheka) .
• The deep brown "temple patina" is the result of secular natural oxidation, an undeniable marker of authenticity .
Mastery of the Navatirthika & Ganga-Jamuna Technique
• This piece features a complex Navatirthika structure grouping nine Jinas organized over five levels, a configuration much rarer than unit or triple altars .
• The use of the Ganga-Jamuna technique (bimaterial inlays of silver for the eyes and the shrivatsa, and copper for the lips and cushion) emphasizes the iconographic richness of the object .
Technical Data
• Period: Late Vaghela Dynasty (Samvat 1354 / 1297 A.D.) .
• Weight: 839.6 grams .
• Material: Heavy brass with bimaterial silver and copper inlays .
• Epigraphy: Complete dorsal inscription mentioning the Sri Ukesh Gaccha and textually confirming the identity of Suparshvanatha through the syllables "Su-Pa-Rshva"
Provenance
• R. M. Collection, Belgium . Ensemble formed and preserved between 1979 and 2009 .
