A very fine Hindu plaque made of brass, featuring a D-shaped body with a pointed, scalloped arch surmounted by a rearing cobra. Modelled in high relief, the plaque displays a front-facing central deity, depicted holding an attribute in each of his four hands, including a dagger, a fork-like sceptre, a knife, and an item with spiral terminals. There are two smaller figures on either side at his feet, possibly the deity's attendants. A crescent and a sun disc are depicted above the figures. The reverse is uneven and unworked with a label from the previous collection. Signs of wear to the surface as consistent with age. Hinduism is an ancient Indian religion that honours many deities and emphasises dharma, karma, and spiritual liberation. Brass plaques depicting gods, symbols, or sacred stories like this fine piece, serve as devotional art in homes and temples.
