古埃及 滑石 献给阿蒙的罗非鱼牌匾

An Egyptian steatite janiform plaque in the form of a tilapia fish. The obverse is depicted in relief with incised markings highlighting the anatomical details of the fish. Diagonal striations decorate the fins, whilst a diamond pattern decorates the body and indicates the scales. The reverse is decorated with three hieroglyphs. To the top is a faint 'men' draughtboard sign. Underneath is a simplified figure to the left and a large feather to the right. The draughtboard and feather most likely form the name of the god Amun. Earthy encrustations and wear to the surface. Chipping around the edges, particularly above the 'men' sign. The plaque has been pierced longitudinally for suspension. The distinct design of the fish categorises it as a tilapia fish or ‘bolti’ fish, known in Egyptian as ‘nekhau’. Like most amulets it symbolised regeneration, important for the afterlife. Associated with Hathor, tilapia fish were a symbol of fertility and renewal, as they carry their young in their mouth. For the ancient Egyptians, the orifice was an unusual source for birth and symbolised regeneration. Measurements: L 1.6cm x W 1.1cm Provenance: Ex Mustaki Collection, early 20th century, UK.
