-> Coins, symbols of power - struck in metal. From Emperors to Kings, rulers struck their image and ideals into coins, turning currency into one of history’s most enduring propaganda tools. These small objects passed daily through the hands of ordinary people, spreading messages of authority with every exchange.
-> Publius Septimius Geta, the ill-fated younger son of Septimius Severus, briefly shared the Roman throne as co-Emperor with his brother Caracalla before being murdered in 211 AD. The rivalry between the two brothers is legendary, even the Imperial Palace itself had to be divided into two separate sections.
After a failed attempt to assassinate Geta during the Saturnalia Festival, Caracalla let their mother, Julia Domna, arrange a reconciliation meeting in her apartments. Deprived of his bodyguards, Geta was then murdered by centurions in the arms of his mother. He was only 22 years old. Despite her grief, Julia Domna was forced to remain at court under Caracalla’s rule.
Geta’s short reign and the subsequent damnatio memoriae led to a thorough erasure of his image from public life. This makes his surviving coins rare and poignant relics of a tragic Dynasty.
On this denarius, the reverse legend PONTIF TR P COS II proclaims his roles as Pontifex, holder of the tribunician power, and consul for the second time; titles reflecting imperial legitimacy during a fragile co-rule overshadowed by fraternal hatred.
