Val Saint Lambert Crystal Decanter – “Colonial / Mery” Service, ca. 1940s
A striking large crystal decanter by Val Saint Lambert, dating to the 1940s and embodying the refined elegance of late Art Deco design. With its generous one-liter capacity and beautifully balanced proportions, the piece combines functionality with a strong decorative presence.
The decanter features finely executed hand-cut decoration with vertical fluting (“côtes plates”), rising from the base and transitioning into a distinctive scalloped band—an iconic motif of this model. The elegant octagonal stopper echoes the geometry of the body, completing a harmonious and architectural silhouette typical of Val Saint Lambert’s post-war production.
This model is documented in the official Val Saint Lambert catalogue (1945–1950), where it appears as part of the Colonial service, and also within the Mery service in the “côtes plates” cutting variant. Notably, the decanter is prominently illustrated on the catalogue cover—an indication of its importance within the range.
A perfect example of late Art Deco evolving towards modernist clarity, this piece integrates effortlessly into both classic table settings and contemporary interiors.
The decanter remains in very good condition, free from chips, cracks, or internal clouding.
As a small bonus, the decanter will be accompanied by a matching glass from the Mery service with the same “côtes plates” cutting, included as a complimentary addition.
Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks.
The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp.
The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics.
Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation.
