A Rare and Exquisite Sawankhalok Celadon Votive Fertility Figure of A Mother and Child 14th-15th Century AD Sukhothai, Thailand H11.3×W5.2×D3.8 cm This rare and finely modelled votive figure depicts a kneeling mother tenderly holding her child, an image strongly associated with fertility, protection, and maternal devotion. The figure is rendered in a compact yet expressive form, characterised by a gently smiling face, softly modelled features, and a calm, inwardly focused posture typical of Sawankhalok devotional sculpture. The surface is covered with a finely crackled greenish-grey celadon glaze, pooling subtly in recesses and thinning along raised contours, revealing the underlying stoneware body. The glaze exhibits natural wear consistent with age, while areas of exposed reddish-brown clay at the base indicate kiln firing characteristics typical of Sawankhalok production. The hollowed interior and open base suggest its function as a votive or ritual object rather than a purely decorative piece. The stylised facial features, prominent nose, and simplified anatomical forms reflect the synthesis of local Thai aesthetics with broader Buddhist and folk religious traditions during the Sukhothai period. Votive fertility figures of this type are considerably rarer than standard Sawankhalok utilitarian wares and are believed to have been offered at temples or household shrines in prayers for childbirth, protection of offspring, or familial well-being. Comparable examples are preserved in major museum collections, though intact specimens of this quality and expressive presence are uncommon. Provenance: Collection of the Portland Art Museum, Portland, accession no. ST1997.14.5 Acquired from an well-known auction house, USA Exhibition: The Far East Asia Ancient Art Exhibition, February 3rd - 22th, 1966, Meier & Frank's auditorium, Portland. One tag is attached to this lot from the Portland Museum of Art marked with accession numbers. Documentation from the Portland Museum of Art containing records of the original collection, exhibitions, etc., will be provided with a copy of the photographs to your e-mail address. Condition: Overall in generally good condition. The neck was previously broken and subsequently reattached; the nature of the break and repair is consistent with ritual or votive ceramic figures of this type. The surface exhibits natural wear and glaze degradation consistent with age. There is a small area of loss to the tip of the left foot. The right hand shows a triangular loss measuring approximately 0.5 cm, along with a crack extending approximately 3 cm toward the right rear side.
