Taíno Wooden Duho Ceremonial Seat – 10th to 15th Century AD
An exceptional Taíno ceremonial duho carved from a single piece of hardwood, featuring the characteristic elongated seat supported by four sturdy legs and terminating in a finely carved anthropomorphic head with large circular eyes and prominent lips. The upper surface is decorated with incised geometric motifs, including concentric circles and linear patterns associated with Taíno artistic and spiritual traditions. Duhos were prestigious seats reserved for caciques and religious leaders, serving as symbols of authority and status during ceremonies, councils, and ritual activities throughout the Greater Antilles. The sculpture displays a rich aged surface with visible tool marks, ancient wear, natural cracking, and an attractive patina acquired over centuries, highlighting both its authenticity and its importance as a rare example of pre-Columbian Caribbean woodcarving.
