Taíno Serpentine Idol – Dominican Republic – 10th to 15th Century AD Finely carved Taíno idol executed in dark serpentine stone, depicting a highly stylized anthropomorphic figure with an elongated conical headdress and pronounced facial features. The large almond-shaped eyes, prominent nose, open mouth, and carefully incised facial lines create a powerful ceremonial appearance characteristic of Taíno religious imagery. The elegant proportions and polished finish demonstrate the sophisticated lapidary traditions of the Greater Antilles. The figure combines abstract geometry with symbolic representation, reflecting the spiritual role of zemí imagery within Taíno culture. Particularly noteworthy are the engraved oval motifs on the sides of the headdress and the exceptional preservation of the polished surface. Sculptures of this type were associated with ancestral veneration, ritual practice, and the expression of social and spiritual authority within Taíno communities.
