Taíno Anthropomorphic Idol – Dominican Republic – 10th to 15th Century AD
A finely carved Taíno anthropomorphic idol executed in highly polished black stone, depicting a stylized standing figure with an elongated head, prominent beak-like facial features, and folded arms resting against the torso. The minimalist yet powerful design reflects the distinctive artistic traditions of the Taíno peoples of the Greater Antilles, where such figures were closely associated with spiritual beliefs, ancestor veneration, and the cult of the zemís. The carefully balanced proportions and abstract treatment of the human form demonstrate the remarkable sculptural sophistication achieved by Taíno artisans.
The idol is carved from a dense dark stone, most likely black serpentine or polished basalt, exhibiting an attractive glossy surface developed through extensive polishing and age. Incised linear decoration accentuates the head, torso, and limbs, while circular recessed elements mark the eyes and shoulders. The sculpture remains well preserved, displaying only minor surface wear and age-related marks consistent with its considerable antiquity. Its compact dimensions and refined execution make it an excellent representative example of ceremonial Taíno stone carving.
