Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 701 The current owner purchased the Roman / Medieval bronze collection of finger rings from a private collector, N.N. The previous owner, a private collector, N.N. from the Netherlands, stated that the objects had been in his collection since the 1990s. According to the previous owner, the objects had previously been in a private collection in the Netherlands since the 1990s. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the objects was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This collection comprises eleven bronze finger rings dating from the Roman period through the late Medieval and early post-medieval periods. The group includes plain hoop rings, bezel rings intended to hold glass or stone settings, signet-type examples, and decorative forms, illustrating the evolution of personal jewellery over more than fifteen centuries. Bronze finger rings were among the most common personal possessions of antiquity and the Middle Ages. Worn by men, women, and children, they served not only as ornaments but also as symbols of identity, status, religious devotion, and, in some cases, authority. Rings with bezels could be set with coloured glass, gemstones, or engraved intaglios, while simpler examples were intended for everyday wear. These rings were produced by skilled craftsmen using established casting and finishing techniques. Throughout the Roman Empire and later medieval Europe, jewellery workshops supplied local communities as well as regional markets, while artistic styles and manufacturing methods spread through extensive trade and cultural exchange. The diversity within this group reflects changing fashions and technological developments over many centuries. Spanning from the 1st to the 17th century A.D., this collection offers an instructive overview of the development of bronze finger rings across a long period of European history. Together, these objects form a tangible connection to the people of the past, for whom rings were everyday possessions that combined practical, symbolic, and decorative functions.
