Ancient Roman iron bow fibula with a strongly arched upper bow and a long, narrow foot. The original pin remains largely intact and extends along the underside towards the catchplate. Traces of the original decoration remain visible on the bow and foot.

-> Roman iron fibulae are often heavily corroded or survive only in fragments. The largely complete condition and preserved pin make this a particularly appealing and uncommon collector’s piece.

Length: ± 66,5 mm

Good solid condition, complete with hinge, catchplate and pin. To be handled with care.
The iron displays a dense reddish-brown patina with areas of darker encrustations, mineral deposits and signs of wear consistent with age and use.

-> Roman fibulae functioned much like modern safety pins and were used to fasten cloaks, tunics and other garments. Iron examples were less decorative than many bronze or silver brooches but were practical, durable and widely used. Their forms changed over time and varied between regions, allowing archaeologists to use fibulae as important indicators of chronology, dress and cultural connections within the Roman Empire.
