Ancient Roman bronze trumpet fibula with a broad, expanded head and a strongly arched bow.
The bow is richly modelled with a prominent central moulding composed of raised collars and rounded elements. Below this, the brooch narrows into a long foot terminating in a large spherical knob. The original pin remains preserved and extends towards the catchplate.
Good and solid condition, complete. Attractive smooth olive-green patina with areas of cuprite, mineral deposits and surface wear, consistent with age and use.
Length: ± 42,1 mm
Width: ± 29 mm
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
-> Trumpet fibulae were especially popular in the north-western provinces of the Roman Empire, including Britain, Gaul and the Rhineland. Their expanded heads resemble the bell of a trumpet, while the ornate central mouldings often imitate stylised vegetal forms. These brooches were practical garment fasteners, but their size and elaborate decoration also made them visible expressions of regional fashion and personal status.
