The face bears a deeply incised, highly stylised geometric or monogram-like device, now partially obscured by surface wear and encrustation. The construction is particularly characteristic of Byzantine signet rings: a comparatively thin hoop, sharply differentiated shoulders and a raised oval sealing surface intended to carry an engraved personal or symbolic device.
