"Early Medieval Bronze Plate Buckle Fitting with Zoomorphic Decoration Culture / Period: Early Medieval Date / Period: 6th–8th century A.D. Material: Bronze Dimensions: 46 mm Condition: Good condition No shipping outside the European Union. Due to complex export regulations concerning cultural goods, this item cannot be shipped outside the EU. Please ensure you have a delivery address within the European Union before placing a bid. Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 759 The current owner purchased this object from a reputable Dutch numismatic auction house in Schiedam, the Netherlands. Due to privacy regulations, the name of the previous owner could not be disclosed. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This finely cast bronze object is an early medieval plate buckle fitting, decorated in relief with a highly stylised zoomorphic motif. The elongated design, bordered by raised mouldings, incorporates an animal mask with prominent eyes and an elongated muzzle or beak, while the lower field contains an interlaced ornamental motif. At the upper end, the surviving attachment lugs indicate that the fitting was originally mounted to a leather belt as part of a complete buckle assembly. Animal ornament became one of the defining artistic traditions of early medieval Europe. During the 6th–8th centuries, craftsmen transformed animal forms into elegant abstract compositions, combining flowing lines with symmetrical designs. These zoomorphic motifs carried aesthetic significance and may also have been intended to convey protection, strength, or status. Such decorative styles were shared across Germanic cultural traditions, including the Merovingian, Anglo-Saxon, Frisian, and Scandinavian worlds. Belts were essential elements of early medieval dress and often represented far more than practical fasteners. Decorated buckles and belt fittings served as visible indicators of identity, social standing, and skilled craftsmanship. High-quality bronze fittings such as this example were produced in specialised workshops using mould-casting techniques before being finished by hand and fitted to leather belts worn in everyday life. Comparable buckle plates have been recovered from settlements, cemeteries, and river finds across northwestern Europe, illustrating the extensive exchange of artistic styles and metalworking traditions during the Early Middle Ages. Their widespread distribution reflects the interconnected nature of early medieval societies through trade, migration, and cultural contact."
