"Ancient Roman Bronze Finger Ring Culture / Period: Ancient Roman Date / Period: 1st–2nd century A.D. Material: Bronze Dimensions: 18 mm Condition: Good condition No shipping outside the European Union. Due to complex export regulations concerning cultural goods, this item cannot be shipped outside the EU. Please ensure you have a delivery address within the European Union before placing a bid. Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 765 The current owner purchased this object from a reputable Dutch numismatic auction house in Schiedam, the Netherlands. Due to privacy regulations, the name of the previous owner could not be disclosed. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This bronze finger ring is a fine example of personal adornment from the Roman Imperial period. It features a broad, expanding bezel decorated with three carefully engraved parallel grooves, a simple geometric motif characteristic of many everyday Roman rings. Rather than displaying an engraved gemstone or elaborate intaglio, such rings relied on their elegant form and subtle decoration. Bronze rings were worn by men and women throughout the Roman Empire. While precious metal rings reflected wealth and high social status, bronze examples such as this were affordable personal possessions used by soldiers, merchants, craftsmen, farmers, and their families. Rings could serve as ornaments, symbols of personal identity, tokens of affection, or simply as fashionable accessories. Roman bronze rings were produced in specialised workshops using casting techniques, after which the surface was finished by hand with files and engraved decoration. Simple linear motifs remained popular throughout the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D., reflecting the Roman preference for balanced geometric ornamentation that was both durable and practical for everyday wear. Comparable bronze rings have been recovered from settlements, military forts, villas, and cemeteries across the Roman Empire, including Britain, Gaul, Germania, the Danubian provinces, and the Mediterranean. Their widespread distribution illustrates the remarkable uniformity of Roman craftsmanship and the extensive commercial networks that connected distant regions of the Empire. Dating to the 1st–2nd century A.D., this ring belongs to the height of the Roman Imperial period, when personal jewellery formed an important part of daily dress and individual expression."
