The Cross of St. Andrew (diagonal cross or 'saltire') has its origins in early Christian tradition surrounding the Apostle Andrew, one of Christ's first disciples. According to early Christian tradition, St Andrew was martyred at Patras in Greece in the 1st century AD. He was said to have been crucified on a diagonal, X-shaped cross rather than the upright Latin form, as he considered himself unworthy to die in the same manner as Christ. This account first appears in 4th-century writings, notably the Acts of Andrew.
