古代 玻璃 大型古董马具缰绳珠

Date: 3rd - 2nd century BC Diameter: 32 mm Diameter hole: 16 mm Height: 27 mm Surface wear and patination suggest age and long-term use. A thick, spherical blue glass bead featuring a prominent polychrome “eye” motif composed of white, black, and yellow glass. At its center, three dot-and-ring elements are arranged in a triangular formation, enclosed within a yellow crescent against a dark blue field. Additional swirling trails of white and yellow glass accentuate the bead’s dynamic surface pattern. This type of bead is associated with a distinct style of horse harness, notable for its bronze frontlets, breastplate sheets with pendants, and harsh cruciform bits. It is most likely that such beads were affixed to the bridle, where they may have functioned as apotropaic amulets. While a practical function—such as securing strap knots—cannot be excluded, it is unlikely that these beads served a purely decorative or utilitarian role. Their uniform stylistic traits—including size, form, color palette, and eye motif—combined with their rarity and consistent association with warrior gear and horse harnesses, suggest a symbolic or protective function. The presence of eye motifs and the dominant use of dark blue—a color long linked with protective amulets—supports the interpretation of these objects as charms against the evil eye. Ethnographic parallels confirm the widespread belief in the apotropaic power of eye motifs, particularly in regions where protection from jinxes and malevolent forces was culturally significant. This specific type of horse harness—with which the bead is associated—was in use among the Northwest Caucasian barbarian groups during the 3rd to 2nd centuries BCE.
