Tlatilco culture terracotta head fragment – 12th/6th Century BC – 65×36×25 mm – 56 g
This finely modeled terracotta head fragment originates from the Tlatilco culture, which thrived in the Valley of Mexico between the 12th and 6th century BC. The piece features elongated facial proportions, pierced ears with circular ornaments, and an elaborate coiffure rising vertically with carved detailing. The prominent teeth and subtly incised brows give the face an expressive, almost animated appearance, likely tied to ceremonial or symbolic use.
Though fragmentary, the sculpture retains strong character and visual power, with well-preserved facial features and traces of the original orange clay surface. One corner of the lower section is missing, yet the overall condition remains stable and coherent. A striking example of early Mesoamerican artistry that speaks to the cultural richness of the Preclassic period.
