Ancient Roman, Holy Lands Pottery Oil Lamp
Circa 1st century AD
This attractive pottery oil lamp has an elongated piriform body with a central filling-hole set within a raised circular rim and a rounded single-nozzle mouth. The upper surface is framed by concentric moulding that follows the taper towards the spout.
Oil lamps were essential household items used for illumination in ancient times. Typically made of pottery or bronze, these lamps featured a shallow dish filled with oil and a wick inserted through a hole in the spout. The wick was lit, providing a steady flame for lighting indoor spaces during the evening hours.
