古埃及,新王国 滑石 Scarab, 献给阿蒙雷
An ancient Egyptian steatite scarab with hieroglyphics on the reverse. The obverse features a stylised head and clypeus. The elytra and prothorax indicated with incised lines. To the reverse are the hieroglyphs forming the name of the deity Amun-Re; the draughtboard 'men' sign, the water ripple 'n' and the feather of Maat, 'a', and the sun, 're'. Two neb signs frame the composition. The scarab has been pierced longitudinally for suspension. Signs of ageing such as scratches and minor chips to the surface, as well as some discolouration.
The scarab beetle was an exceedingly popular symbol in the art of Ancient Egypt, thought to represent the sun god, Ra. The Ancient Egyptians believed that the scarab beetle rolling its ball of dung across the desert mirrored the journey of the sun across the sky from day to night. As the beetle laid its eggs within the dung, it became a symbol of rebirth and regeneration.

Provenance: Ex Mustaki Collection, early 20th century, UK.
