Ancient Chinese, Ming Dynasty Pottery Zodiac Figure
Circa 14th-17th century AD
This charming glazed pottery statue portrays an anthropomorphic figure with an animal head. The figure is attired in a vibrant, long dress with wide sleeves, while the hands are elegantly folded in front of the chest. The edges of the attire are accentuated with turquoise glaze, while the remaining portions are painted with dark pigments.
This zodiac figure comes from a series of twelve figures, each representing a different animal. The Chinese zodiac is a 12-year cycle of 12 signs. Each year is represented by an animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
