Queen Victoria “Victoria Regina” Gilt Galvano Plaque
Late Victorian / Early Edwardian Decorative Piece – 61 × 63 mm
Not a modern reproduction
Offered here is a beautiful late-19th / early-20th-century gilt galvano plaque depicting the celebrated “Old Head” portrait of Queen Victoria.
This is not an official Royal Mint medal, but a period decorative galvano produced using the historical electroforming technique, widely employed in the Victorian era for ornamental plaques, presentation boxes, small trophies, and commemorative items.
The obverse shows the elegant and highly detailed mature portrait of Queen Victoria wearing the diadem, veil and jewels associated with the final years of her reign (1893–1901).
The legend VICTORIA REGINA follows the classical Latin form used across many official jubilee issues of the period.
Surrounding the portrait is a rich laurel-wreath frame, cast separately and then joined to the central galvano medallion. This type of ornamental surround was common in patriotic household items and gifts produced during the height of British imperial celebration.
The reverse is completely plain and irregular, exactly as expected for authentic galvanoplastic work: concave surface, visible electroforming textures, and the central point where the medallion was fixed to the frame.
This is an excellent piece for collectors of Victorian memorabilia, royal household ornaments, late-Victorian decorative arts, or period display objects.

Historical Note
Galvano plaques were widely produced during the Victorian and Edwardian periods as decorative pieces for furniture, presentation boxes, small shields, souvenirs, and patriotic items.
They were appreciated both for their fine detail and for their durability, and today they represent a fascinating part of late-19th-century decorative arts.
The portrait used here is directly inspired by the official “Old Head” design adopted in 1893 and used until Victoria’s death in 1901 — symbolizing stability, dignity, and the height of the British Empire.
