Late 19th–early 20th century Anglo-Jewish charitable collection box, England, c.1890–1910. Of solid hardwood rectangular form, the top with a narrow donation slot leading to an internal hinged flap, the front applied with its original printed and decorated paper label reading “For Relief of Poor Believing and Unbelieving Jews… ‘Their debtors they are.’ Rom. XV, 26–27”, and naming Israel Isaiah Aschkenasi, with address 52 Alconbury Road, Clapton, London, E. This address places the box firmly within the East London Jewish community during a period of significant immigration and organised charitable relief. Such boxes were intended for domestic or congregational use to collect alms for distribution to the needy. The box retains its original surface and patina, showing expected age-related wear, minor losses and cracking to the printed label, and small knocks to the edges consistent with long use. Measuring approximately 15 × 10 cm, it survives in honest, unrestored condition. A scarce and evocative piece of Anglo-Jewish social history, of strong interest to collectors of Judaica, religious ephemera, and East London historical material.
