Belgium - 1 Broodkaart 1880 10x - ''VOORUIT'' Obv: Personification of Societal Advancement ('Vooruit') seated with hammer, wheel and beehive - VOORUIT - DE NAMAKER ZAL VERVOLGD WORDEN Rev: Denominational mark 1 - BROODKAART "Broodkaarten", or "bread cards", were a form of payment issued by socialist cooperatives such as Vooruit to help workers gain access to quality food. These cards could be bought in the cooperative's own shops and used to purchase bread—usually slightly more expensive, but of higher quality. The cooperative movement, led by Edward Anseele, began in 1880, a year that appears on most of these cards regardless of their actual issue date. Many of the later cards, such as those from Dendermonde, were modeled after the original versions from Ghent. The use of bread cards was eventually discontinued in 1967 due to concerns over hygiene and practicality. Interestingly, the inscription on this card hints that counterfeiting was not an uncommon problem."
