Holy Roman Empire silver thaler – ca. 1555 – 40 mm – 28.51 g
An exceptional silver thaler struck under the reign of Charles V, likely minted in Nijmegen, Gelderland, around the year 1555. This coin captures the imperial might of Charles V during the final years of his rule, reflecting both the classical Renaissance style and the assertive power of Habsburg heraldry. The obverse shows the Emperor in elaborate armor, crowned and holding the imperial orb and scepter, while the reverse presents the imperial double-headed eagle with a shield of arms at its breast—symbol of dominion over the Holy Roman Empire.
The coin stands out for its sharp details, particularly on the bust and eagle, and for its magnificent original patina. The surface exhibits a beautiful interplay of tones with golden and bluish hues that accentuate its high relief. Despite some circulation, this is clearly a specimen above average, desirable for its state of preservation and the depth of its historical significance.
