日本. AE Amulet / Charm coin Esen Tenpo (沒有保留價)

Item Description A remarkable decorative Edo period etching medallion featuring an extraordinarily detailed portrayal of the Rokkasen (Six Poetry Immortals), a celebrated group of six master poets from early Heian period Japan. This exceptional piece transcends the typical Tenpō Tsūhō form, evolving into a sophisticated decorative art piece (escutcheon or "esatsu") rather than a circulating currency. Both obverse and reverse surfaces display exquisite high-relief artwork depicting the six legendary poets—Sojo Henjo, Ariwara no Narihira, Bunaya no Yasuhide, Kisen Hōshi, Ono no Komachi, and Ōtomo no Kuronushi—with remarkable artistic refinement. The central square aperture remains characteristic of the Tenpō format, yet the absence of conventional monetary inscriptions and the presence of refined narrative illustration confirm this piece's decorative rather than transactional purpose. The Rokkasen held profound cultural significance throughout Japanese history, celebrated for their poetic mastery and immortalized in later centuries through extensive literary and visual traditions. This exceptional example showcases superb craftsmanship, with preservation quality that demonstrates careful stewardship over generations, retaining the original patina while displaying minimal wear. A small depression on the surface adds to its authenticity and provenance. Size Width: 3.8 cm Height: 5.7 cm Thickness: 3 mm Weight 30.5 g Condition Exceptional condition with minimal age-related wear and virtually no surface deterioration visible. The deep patina reflects centuries of careful preservation. A minor depression on one area is consistent with historical handling and adds to authenticity rather than detracting from aesthetic appeal. The relief details remain sharp and well-defined. Artist/Maker Profile Unknown Artisan (Late Edo/Early Meiji Period) - This decorative Tenpō-based medallion was created during the late Edo to early Meiji era (estimated 1840s-1870s) by a skilled copper craftsman whose identity remains unrecorded. The piece represents a sophisticated evolution of Tenpō Tsūhō format, adapted for decorative and commemorative purposes rather than circulation. The artist's decision to depict the Rokkasen—figures central to Japanese literary tradition since their classification in the Kokinshu preface by Ki no Tsurayuki—reflects sophisticated cultural knowledge and artistic vision. The creation of such narrative decorative medallions was undertaken by master copper artisans familiar with traditional Japanese iconography and relief-casting techniques. The exceptional quality of the Rokkasen portraiture suggests training within a formal workshop tradition, though specific attribution remains unknown due to the absence of maker's marks or signatures.
