The Commemorative War Medal for the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871 Campaign Medal, also known as the Franco-Prussian War Medal) was established on May 20, 1871, by Kaiser Wilhelm I of Prussia to honor those who participated in the war against France.
The combatant medal was made of light bronze obtained from melted-down captured French cannons.
Reverse (pictured): The center features the monogram of Emperor Wilhelm I (the letter "W" under a crown), with the inscription "Dem siegreichen Heere" (To the victorious army) below. Around the rim is the inscription: "Gott war mit uns, Ihm sei die Ehre" (God was with us, to Him be the glory). Obverse: The reverse side of the medal typically depicts the Iron Cross in glory with the dates "1870–1871."
Ribbon: Black, white, and red ribbon in the colors of the German Empire.
