A large decorative “Byzantine cross” wall hanger with two candle holders, originating from the Christian Orthodox tradition. Such pieces were typically produced in the early to mid-20th century, mostly in Greece. The object includes several symbolic elements in addition to the central cross. At the top is a figure holding a sword and a severed head, most likely representing David after his victory over Goliath, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The two-headed eagles suspended on either side are derived from the heraldry of Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire and a historic center of Orthodox Christianity. The cross is made of metal, with punched decoration. It is constructed from multiple articulated elements joined vertically, allowing for slight movement. The upper hook is asymmetric but without visible damage, so it is likely the original design. This byzantine cross can be used as a decoration indoor or outdoor, hanging free or against a wall (can be used with candles only when hanging free).
