1893 Great Britain Queen Victoria old Head 6 Pence (NGC MS63)
Highlights:
1. As the debut year (1893) of Thomas Brock’s mature portrait of Queen Victoria in mourning, this coin marks a clear transition in Victorian coinage. It replaced the unpopular Jubilee Head and introduced the “IND IMP” title, symbolizing the British Empire at its zenith — a key historical milestone that appeals strongly to type and date-set collectors.
2. Unlike earlier idealized youthful portraits, the Veiled Head realistically depicts the elderly widowed Queen wearing her mourning veil, crown, and regalia. This dignified, lifelike representation was widely praised at the time and remains one of the most artistically respected royal portraits on British coinage, adding emotional and aesthetic significance.
3. NGC MS63 certification are scarce enough to command a meaningful premium over melt value. Its stable demand in Victorian silver sets, combined with the historical importance of the late-Victorian period, gives it good long-term collector interest and moderate upside potential compared to more common later-date Veiled Head issues.
Coin Story:
The 1893 Queen Victoria Veiled Head (also known as Old Head or Widowed Head) sixpence is the final major portrait design of the Victorian era. Sculpted by Thomas Brock, it was introduced by the Royal Mint in 1893 for the circulating coin series and continued until the Queen’s death in 1901.
Queen Victoria reigned for 63 years (1837–1901), and her coin portraits evolved through several stages: the early Young Head, the short-lived 1887 Golden Jubilee Head (which faced public criticism), and finally the Veiled Head from 1893 onward. This design portrays the 74-year-old Queen wearing a crown, the Garter Star, a heavy necklace, and a widow’s mourning veil over her shoulders — a reflection of her long period of mourning following Prince Albert’s death in 1861.
The portrait was widely praised for its dignity, nobility, and realistic depiction of the Queen in her later years. For the first time on British coinage, the obverse legend included “IND IMP” (Indiae Imperatrix – Empress of India), symbolizing the height of the British Empire. The reverse features the traditional crowned “SIX PENCE” surrounded by an olive-branch wreath.
The Veiled Head series marks the late-Victorian monetary reform and holds significant historical and artistic value, making it an essential piece in any Victorian British silver coin collection.
