The knives are packed in the original box. The table forks and spoons are stored in special Christofle roll-up cloths. The coffee or teaspoons are in an original Christofle box.
In the '50s, Gio Ponti launched Sabattini with a major solo exhibition in Milan.
Sabattini became Christofle's creative director between 1956 and 1963 and produced a series of elegant objects with sober and pure lines. Almost all of them became legendary and can be found in the collections of the largest museums such as the MOMA or the Victoria and Albert Museum. Small detail, Sabattini can be described as a pioneer in the history of cutlery: his "Orly" knife is the first suitable for both right-handed and left-handed people.
It was designed in the spirit of the airport’s inauguration and expansion
The goal was to reflect a modern, forward-looking France.
The Orly pattern is a pure example of Sabattini’s style:
Strictly minimalist
No decoration or engraving
Clean, straight lines
Slightly tapered handles
Subtle shaping at the end
It is often described as:
“modernist”
“timeless”
“essential design”
In short, it stands in complete contrast to traditional ornate silverware.
Designed: around 1957
Produced: for a relatively limited period
Continued until roughly the mid-1970s
Because of this:
it is relatively rare today
highly appreciated by collectors of modern design
the transition from decorative silverware → modern industrial design
a moment when everyday tableware became part of contemporary design culture
