Northwest Africa 14680 (NWA 14680) Purchased: 2021 Nov Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3) Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Unequilibrated ordinary chondrite, consisting of closely packed chondrules and chondrule fragments, with low amounts of interchondrule matrix. The mean apparent chondrule size is 580 μm (n=160). Small amounts of Fe-Ni metal (partly terrestrially oxidized) and troilite, mostly residing outside of chondrules. Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: The mean olivine composition is Fa14.7±11.0 (Fa1.0-42.6; n=24); the mean low-Ca pyroxene composition is Fs8.7±6.6Wo1.0±0.8 (Fs1.5-20.9Wo0.3-2.5; n=18). Classification: LL chondrite, based on the low metal content and large mean apparent chondrule size. Petrologic type 3, based on the chemical variation of olivine and pyroxene.
