An Austrian porcelain basket bowl produced in the Royal Vienna style during the 20th century. The piece is modelled in an oval basket form with a body shaped to imitate a woven straw plait. The lower section is decorated with applied garland ornaments in relief; the upper section is pierced (open-work) and embellished with medallion panels that appear to employ the pate-sur-pate technique, depicting potted children amid plant motifs. Pate-sur-pate is a labour-intensive cameo process in which translucent layers of white slip are built up by hand on a coloured ground, producing a low-relief, cameo-like quality associated with prestige European porcelain of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rich gilt decoration in a repeating plant pattern is applied throughout the exterior.
The Royal Vienna style references the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory founded in 1718, whose vocabulary was widely adopted by Bohemian and Austrian workshops producing high-quality decorative wares in the 19th-century academic tradition. No factory mark or decorator's mark has been recorded for this piece; the attribution is to style only and should not be taken to imply manufacture by the original Vienna establishment.
Condition is Very Good. No chips, cracks, or restorations are visible in the source images. Buyers should examine the gilding wear and the integrity of the pierced open-work panels on receipt, as photographic assessment of fine surface condition has limitations. Dimensions: 28 x 21 x 12 cm. Weight: 1273 g.
