賣家描述
exceptional French Heavy Linen Wedding Bed Sheet with Ajours and Monogram "A.C."
An exceptional example of traditional French domestic linen, this substantial handwoven bed sheet has remained "dans son jus"—a French expression meaning it has been preserved in its original, untouched condition. It appears to have seen very little use and retains the crisp character of a textile that has spent generations carefully folded away in a wedding armoire.
The linen is woven from heavy flax with an exceptionally close warp and weft, producing a wonderfully dense yet supple cloth of outstanding quality. Such finely woven linen is increasingly difficult to find and is a testament to the skill of the original weaver.
The head of the sheet is beautifully decorated with three rows of delicate jours (drawn-thread or openwork embroidery). At first glance, the embroidered motifs resemble floral bouquets, but closer inspection reveals them to be stylised trees with finely worked leaves. This charming design continues down each side for approximately 65 cm, where it is completed with a final embroidered tree above the openwork border.
Centred beneath the decoration is an elegant oblong cartouche enclosing the embroidered initials A.C. The monogram is worked in impressive high relief, creating remarkable depth and texture, and is flanked by small decorative medallions that enhance the overall refinement of the design.
Condition: Beautifully preserved with minimal signs of use. Having come directly from a traditional French wedding armoire, the linen has been carefully stored away for some time. As with all antique household linens that have been in long-term storage, we recommend laundering or airing the piece before use to restore its natural freshness.
A superb example of 19th-century French linen, combining outstanding craftsmanship, decorative elegance, and exceptional originality
