Baccarat “Serpentine” Crystal Sugar Bowl, 1903–1904
An exceptional antique Baccarat crystal sugar bowl from the celebrated Serpentine series, documented in the original Baccarat tableware catalogue of 1903–1904. The model appears in the period catalogue among Baccarat’s sucriers, providing a particularly valuable historical reference for its identification and authenticity.
The piece is distinguished by its remarkable swirling decoration: alternating bands of brilliant diamond-cut crystal spiral dynamically around the bowl and lid, creating an almost sculptural effect and spectacular reflections of light. The elaborate cutting continues onto the foot and finial, demonstrating the precision and quality for which Baccarat crystal was already internationally renowned at the beginning of the 20th century.
The sugar bowl is marked “BACCARAT” inside the bowl at the base, and its attribution is further supported by the surviving original catalogue illustration. The distinctive form and decoration correspond to the documented Serpentine model, making this a particularly well-referenced example of early Baccarat production.
Remarkably, the piece survives in exceptional condition, apparently never used, with no visible traces of use. Considering that it dates from the very beginning of the 20th century, such preservation is especially noteworthy.
A wonderful discovery for a Baccarat or antique crystal collector, and equally an elegant and historically authentic gift for a lover of French decorative arts. More than a functional table object, it is a beautifully preserved example of Baccarat craftsmanship from over 120 years ago.
Baccarat is one of the most prestigious crystal manufacturers in the world, founded in 1764 in the village of Baccarat, in northeastern France, under the patronage of King Louis XV. Originally a glassworks producing window panes, mirrors, and stemware, the factory shifted to crystal production in 1816, quickly gaining international acclaim for the clarity and brilliance of its creations.
By the 19th century, Baccarat had become synonymous with luxury and refinement, supplying royal courts and aristocracy across Europe, Russia, and the Middle East. The company showcased its masterpieces at the great World Exhibitions in Paris and became known for its innovation in cut crystal designs, chandeliers, and tableware.
Today, Baccarat remains a symbol of French excellence in fine crystal, blending centuries-old craftsmanship with contemporary design, while its antique pieces—like early 20th-century stemware—are highly prized by collectors worldwide.
