Crispwhite relief figures stand out against a deep cobalt blue ground inthe celebrated Phanolith technique — the semi-translucent cameorelief for which Mettlach became famous. The scene depicts Aurora, goddess of the dawn, scattering flowersbefore Apollo's chariot as it sweeps through the clouds, attended bythe dancing Horae and a torch-bearing putto — a composition afterGuido Reni's celebrated fresco. An artist's monogram and the date"78" appear on the face of the plaque.
