Antique Catholic Prayer Book “Engel Bestierder” – Genuine Silver Mounts, Gilt Edges & Two Devotional Lace Cards – Antwerp, c. 1869

A particularly beautiful and richly decorated 19th-century Catholic prayer book, entitled “Engel Bestierder”, published in Antwerp by D. Spitaels, Boekdrukker-Boekhandelaar, Borgerhoutschen Steenweg 258.

This impressive devotional book is preserved in an elegant black leather binding, lavishly embellished with genuine silver fittings. The front cover features an elaborate silver monogram, complemented by silver corner protectors, decorative studs and two substantial hinged clasps. The silver bears period marks, as shown in the photographs.

The text is printed in Dutch, with attractive blue ornamental borders surrounding the pages.

* A finely coloured image of the Virgin Mary, surrounded by an exceptionally intricate paper-lace border.
* A French devotional card entitled “La Sainte Face”, depicting the Holy Face of Christ and relating the story of Saint Veronica. This card was published by the renowned Parisian religious printer Bouasse-Lebel, 29 Rue Saint-Sulpice, and bears catalogue number 4136.

Condition

The prayer book remains in attractive antique condition, with age-related wear consistent with its considerable age. The leather shows some surface wear, while the silver fittings retain an appealing natural patina. The gilt page edges remain exceptionally decorative. The pages show occasional foxing, small marks and minor edge wear. The delicate devotional cards display some age-related discolouration and minor wear to their lace borders.
